INTERNSHIPS

AEDC has hosted interns from Lehigh Valley colleges and universities since its earliest days. Working closely with students, professors and administrators at high-quality institutions of higher learning has led to multiple benefits for all involved. Students get an opportunity to work in a fast-paced, professional environment with lots of exposure to all levels of government and tremendous opportunity learn the development industry first-hand. Colleges have a reliable source of challenging projects for future students and an increased likelihood of their graduates staying in the region, thereby strengthening their alumni network. Best of all, Allentown benefits from the sharpest minds in the region applying their skills and brainpower to the challenge of moving the city forward.

In recent years, AEDC has hosted interns from Columbia University, Vassar College, Muhlenberg College, Cedar Crest College and Kutztown University. Interns have worked on projects ranging from development of a unified vision statement for Allentown communities to a survey of conditions conducive to entrepreneurial development in the City to an analysis of upper floors residential development in Center City. Student interns have interacted with community groups, commercial property owners, local entrepreneurs, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the British and German Consulates, and many other stakeholders.

Recent Projects

In 2008, Sahil Shah, a Columbia University student, and graduate of Parkland HS, researched the state of entrepreneurship in Allentown. Mr. Shah met with local entrepreneurs, reviewed academic papers, and and collected economic data to create a presentation making recommendations for improving the entrepreneurial climate in Allentown. Mr. Shah is presently working on a rural electrification model in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. He will graduate in 2011. You can review his AEDC work here, at a site he designed.

In 2009, Elizabeth Northey, a Kutztown University Senior, assisted Allentown Ahead's Visioning Committee with a survey of Allentown neighborhood groups to develop a vision for the city. Ms. Northey developed a questionnaire, met with local leaders, collected community data and synthesized disparate visions into a single statement which she then presented to the City of Allentown's Department of Planning. She graduated from Kutztown University in May 2009 and is preparing for a career in public administration.

In 2008, Michael Misciagna, a Muhlenberg College Senior, took the lead from Allentown's Department of Community and Economic Development and conducted a feasibility analysis and market study for upper floors residential opportunities on the 700 Block of Hamilton Street. Mr. Misciagna reviewed historical building data, communicated with property owners and reviewed the Lehigh Valley residential market to prepare a presentation for Allentown Ahead's Real Estate Committee. He graduated from Muhlenberg College in May 2009 and is currently employed by Lutron, in the Lehigh Valley.
